Company ProfileBarlow Associates was formed on March 1, 1969 to help consulting engineering and architectural companies increase their effectiveness and profitability. The company's consulting assignments have included all aspects of the management of professional practices including strategic positioning, Organization and Operations Improvements to Increase Profit (Organization Studies), partnership and shareholder matters, Mergers and Acquisitions (M & A), Internal Transfers of Ownership (ITO), valuations of shares, strategic planning, Incentive Bonus Programs (Bonus Programs), the development of more effective financial management procedures, and Project Planning and Profit Control Systems (PP & PC). In the year 2000, the company's consultants helped an 1,800-employee-44 office consulting engineering company double its profits. The company's consultants have designed and conducted management development and project management courses for consulting engineering and architectural companies in many countries and in 1972 published a two volume management text, "Professional Management for Consulting Engineers and Architects", and in 1978 a single volume text, "Project Management" for use in the company's business courses. Mr. Barlow published "Internal Transfer of Ownership" in 1986 and since 1969 the company's consultants have published many articles on managing and ownership transfer for consulting engineering and architectural companies; the most recent entitled "Valuing Your firm Should Be An Ongoing Process", in the American Consulting Engineer; "Some Valuers + Their Valuations = Caveat Emptor", in the Professional Services Management Journal, "The Future of Consulting Engineering in Canada" in Environmental Science & Engineering, "Increase Company Profits, Personal Incomes" in Professional Services Management Journal, "Seamless Internal Transfer of Ownership" in A&E Business and "Incentive Programs: Ten Facts of Life", "14 Keys to Bonus Success", and "To Sell (or Buy): THAT is the 'Ownership' Question", all in the Professional Services Management Journal. The company's consultants have been keynote speakers on several continents and have conducted business management seminars and courses for many professional associations including FIDIC and the professional design associations of Canada, the United States of America, Ireland, England, Scotland, South Africa, Australia, Norway, Hong Kong and Singapore. Since 1969, the company's consultants have provided services to more than 750 consulting engineering and architectural companies in 17 countries. These services have focused on many aspects of the management of professional design companies, including how to increase profitability. During the last few years, the company's consultants arranged the merger and re-organization of three consulting engineering companies in South Africa, three consulting engineering companies in the United States, consulted on a proposed three-company merger and arranged the merger of two E/A companies in New Zealand. The company's consultants have negotiated the purchase, sale and merger of engineering and architectural companies in a number of countries including Canada, Australia, Scotland, England, the Middle East, New Zealand and the United States: These companies ranged in size from 10 employees to 3,500 employees. Brian Barlow obtained a degree in business economics from Brock University and worked in banking before joining GE Capital and then managed an office for a specialized commercial financial company. Kenneth Barlow, obtained a degree in civil engineering from the University of British Columbia and a Masters degree in Business Administration from the University of Western Ontario. While obtaining his MBA Mr. Barlow was employed by the Graduate School of Business to investigate the scope and effectiveness of the use of Operations Research in Canadian business. In 1995, Mr. Barlow was the Project Director for a Government-Industry financed sector strategy study for Ontario's Consulting Engineers. The report is titled "A Leadership Focus." In 1999 Mr. Barlow completed a study for the Ontario Association of Architects and prepared a report titled "The Practice of Architecture & Technology in Ontario." Mr. Barlow is a Certified Management Consultant, a member of professional organizations in both engineering and management consulting, and is listed in Who's Who in America.
